JOB candidates have been comprehensively warned about how inappropriate material on social networking sites can come back to haunt them. But the websites can also play a positive role in job hunting and one company has cashed in on that by offering recruiters a service to create and maintain a Facebook presence, a move it claims will "take the 'refer a friend' concept to a new level".

According to Adlogic, the custom application it is offering also allows recruiters to post their jobs directly to Facebook using the multi-post system. Craig Schuetrumpf of Adlogic says it's ideal for agencies still grappling with the idea of social networking in a corporate context.

He says Adlogic has already worked closely with more than a dozen clients to pilot the application, building each client a Facebook presence that engages and informs candidates. "You can even post videos, encourage visitors to invite their friends and link to your corporate website," Mr Schuetrumpf says.

IS IT a sign of the times when a debt collection agency is invited to provide presenters for a business function? That will be the case on Wednesday when Melbourne's West Export Network's breakfast theme will be "surviving in tough times". It's on from 7.15am at the Yarraville Club, 135 Stephen St, Yarraville, and guest speakers will be senior managers from Dun & Bradstreet. For bookings, call 97420916.

NEWS of the State Government's massive transport plan naturally overshadowed an initiative of a more immediate nature to help commuters get to work. A new bike storage cage has been installed at Eltham station as the first in a $1million investment by the Government.

The cages, to be known as "parkiteer" cages, will store about 25 bikes and will be installed at nine more stations and be managed by Bicycle Victoria.

THIS week's Networking discount offer comes from the curiously named i-to-i, a company that lays claim to being "the world's leading provider of accredited TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) courses".

It offers a range of programs but recommends a minimum 100-hour course to secure a well-paid job.

To get started, for any bookings made during December, for courses beginning in December or January, i-to-i is offering 20 per cent off weekend courses, plus a free 20-hour online course for $420 - a saving of $240. -- GLEN JAMES
